I Flew to the Philippines for Jollibee… and Accidentally Discovered Paradise

Published on 4 January 2025 at 00:00

Let me just start by saying: this entire trip began with a fried chicken craving. A very specific fried chicken craving. I didn’t go to the Philippines to find myself or swim with majestic sea creatures or even chase waterfalls like TLC told me not to. No, friends. I flew across the planet because I needed to know if Jollibee—the beloved Filipino fast-food chain featuring a disturbingly joyful bee in red overalls—was worth the hype. Spoiler alert: IT WAS...shockingly, so was KFC!!!!!. But so was everything else. What started as a mission for crispy Chickenjoy spiraled into an epic journey through Cebu, El Nido, and Coron that I still daydream about—usually while eating sad, non-Jollibee chicken back home.

Cebu: Jollibee, Whale Sharks, and My Dignity in a Helmet
First stop: Cebu—a city that’s alive, chaotic, warm, and somehow always smells faintly of grilled meat and mangoes. My first priority? Jollibee, obviously. I charged through the airport like it was Black Friday and ordered everything that had a smiling cartoon bee next to it. Chickenjoy? Divine. Filipino spaghetti with hot dogs? A cultural revelation. Pineapple juice? Hydration with a twist. I cried. I laughed. I Instagrammed it all. I was now spiritually bonded to that bee.

But I couldn't spend my entire trip crying over fast food (although I tried), so I headed south to Oslob to swim with whale sharks—which, FYI, are approximately the size of a minivan and surprisingly chill about strangers gawking at them while wearing neon life vests. The experience was both magical and mildly panic-inducing, mostly because I was trying to look graceful while swallowing seawater and internally screaming “PLEASE DON’T EAT ME” (they don’t even have teeth, but still).

Next up: Kawasan canyoneering. This is where someone says, “Hey, want to hike through a jungle, jump off cliffs into cerulean water, and slide down rocks like a human waterpark?” And for some reason, you say yes. It was exhilarating, gorgeous, and also the moment I realized my knees are not what they used to be. I also screamed “YOLO” mid-jump, which was both embarrassing and accurate.

El Nido: Where Heaven Has Wi-Fi and Mango Shakes
After conquering Cebu, I took a slightly traumatic van ride to El Nido—a tropical dreamland where the water looks Photoshopped, and even your worst travel selfie looks like a travel ad. El Nido is basically the Instagram model of islands: stunning, unbothered, and covered in natural highlighter.

I booked an island-hopping tour with names like “Secret Lagoon” and “Hidden Beach,” which made me feel like I was starring in a tropical treasure hunt with a group of hungover strangers in life jackets. We kayaked, snorkeled, climbed into lagoons through holes the size of my carry-on, and swam in water so clear I swear it cured my seasonal depression. I also got stung by something small and unidentifiable, but I took that as a rite of passage and pretended it didn’t hurt (it did).

In between island hopping, I devoured grilled seafood, mango sticky rice, and about 47 mango shakes. I didn’t walk El Nido—I floated. Mostly from the sugar high, but also from happiness.

Coron: The Grand Finale Featuring Hot Springs and Ghost Ships
Then came Coron—a quieter, less hyped destination that sneakily ended up being my favorite. If El Nido is the cool girl in high school who does yoga and has perfect beach hair, Coron is her artsy sister who dives shipwrecks and doesn’t own shoes.

Here, I hiked up Mount Tapyas—all 721 steps of it—which I counted with my wheezing lungs and regretted immediately. The view from the top? Worth every single thigh cramp. Sweaty, victorious, and possibly hallucinating from dehydration, I took it all in and rewarded myself with yet another San Miguel beer later.

Then I dipped into the Maquinit Hot Springs, which are heated by the Earth itself and probably have healing powers (I can’t prove it, but my skin was GLOWING after). I looked like a boiled dumpling and couldn’t have been happier.

The crown jewel of Coron, though, is the wreck diving and lake hopping. We snorkeled over sunken WWII ships, which made me feel like Lara Croft if she was terrible at swimming and mildly afraid of fish. Kayangan Lake was so clear it felt illegal. Like, how is nature THIS pretty? I floated, I cried a little, and I pretended I was in a music video.

The Cost of Being This Fabulous
Let’s talk pesos and priorities. Here's how much joy you can buy in the Philippines without selling a kidney:

Jollibee feast: ₱200 (~$5 CAD). That’s less than a fancy latte and infinitely more satisfying.

Whale shark tour: ₱1,500 (~$35 CAD). Comes with a side of existential awe.

Canyoneering: ₱1,700 (~$40 CAD). Includes guide, gear, and a new appreciation for your legs.

Island hopping (El Nido & Coron): ₱1,200–1,800 (~$30–45 CAD). Boat, lunch, and endless bragging rights included.

Accommodations: ₱800–2,000/night (~$20–50 CAD). Beachfront bliss for the price of brunch back home.

Domestic flights: Around ₱3,000–5,000 (~$70–120 CAD). Worth it to keep the adventure rolling.

Honestly? For less than what I’ve spent during an aggressive Target run, I got to live out my tropical fantasy, eat gloriously fried things, and swim with giant sea puppies.

Final Thoughts: Chicken Was Just the Beginning
I came to the Philippines for Jollibee. I left with saltwater in my soul, sandal tan lines, and a new addiction to mangoes. From adrenaline-pumping adventures in Cebu to the surreal beauty of El Nido’s lagoons, and finally to Coron’s tranquil hot springs and hauntingly beautiful shipwrecks—every second felt like a highlight reel.

So if you’re thinking of going: do it. Pack your sunscreen, leave room in your suitcase for dried mangoes, and surrender to the chaos, charm, and sheer magic of the Philippines. And above all…

Never underestimate the power of chicken to change your life.

Let's break it down..

When people talk about Coron, they aren't just talking about a place—they're talking about an entire bucket list. From crystal-clear lakes to sun-drenched beaches and the iconic shipwrecks of history, Coron is the kind of place that feels like it was designed by someone who took the phrase “paradise” way too literally.

One thing you absolutely cannot skip while in Coron is the island-hopping experience. But if you’re wondering where to start, let me take you through some of the most jaw-dropping, Insta-worthy stops that will make your soul feel like it’s been scrubbed clean with saltwater and sunshine.

1. Kayangan Lake – Asia’s Cleanest Lake

Let’s start with the big one: Kayangan Lake. This isn’t just any lake, folks. It's one of the cleanest lakes in Asia. You know the kind of place where you can actually see straight through the water—like, really see through it? That’s Kayangan. It feels almost too perfect to be real. This freshwater lake is nestled among jagged limestone cliffs, giving you the vibe of a lost world where everything is impossibly beautiful.

The journey to Kayangan Lake involves a bit of a hike, but trust me, it’s worth it. The 15-minute trek will have you sweating like a pig in a sauna, but when you emerge at the viewpoint, the sight of the lake, with its stunning blue hues, will make you feel like you just found a secret treasure trove. And here’s the best part: the water’s so clean and pristine, you’ll wonder if you’ve slipped into some kind of magical Instagram filter.

It’s a 1-hour stop, free admission, and if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, dive in and swim around. Your skin will feel like silk afterward, and your social media game will level up exponentially.

2. Twin Lagoon – Two Worlds Collide

Next up, we have Twin Lagoon, and you know what they say: good things come in pairs. This spot is so iconic that if it were a couple, it’d be the envy of all other travel destinations. The lagoon consists of two bodies of water, separated by towering limestone cliffs, creating a mesmerizing contrast that feels straight out of a fantasy movie.

The best part about this lagoon is the thermocline phenomenon. Imagine floating through waters of varying temperatures—some spots are ice-cold, and others feel like a warm bath, making you feel like you’re swimming through different worlds. It’s like nature’s version of the ultimate spa.

You’ll spend about 2 hours here, swimming, soaking in the scenery, and marveling at the geological wonderland around you. Free admission, and totally worth every second. Just don’t get distracted by the stunning cliffs—you might miss the “Instagramable” spot for that perfect shot!

3. Sunset Beach – Your Beach Paradise

After all that swimming and hiking, you deserve some relaxation time at Sunset Beach. If you ever imagined the perfect spot to watch the sun dip below the horizon, this is it. Crystal-clear waters? Check. Palm trees swaying gently in the breeze? Double check. Sand so white it makes you question whether you’re still on planet Earth? Yes, please.

You can lounge on the sand, snorkel, or enjoy a casual dip in the warm waters. This beach is often included in tours where you get to relax under a hut called a kubo, eating freshly prepared seafood while the sun takes its final bow. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a celebrity—even if you’re just eating fish and rice like the rest of us.

4. Smith Coral Garden – Underwater Magic

Coron isn’t just known for its beaches—its underwater scene is just as spectacular. The Smith Coral Garden is a snorkeling haven, where you’ll swim through lush coral gardens, vibrant fish, and maybe even encounter a sea turtle or two if you’re lucky. And don’t forget the iconic Lusong Gunboat wreck. This World War II shipwreck, encrusted with colorful coral, has become a home to various fish species, making it a perfect spot for underwater adventurers.

5. Irako Shipwreck – Ghosts of the Past

While we’re on the subject of shipwrecks, let’s talk about the Irako Shipwreck. This one’s a bit of a throwback to World War II, and it’s not just for history buffs. The ship is completely encrusted with vibrant corals and surrounded by schools of fish that will make you wonder if you’ve wandered into the most peaceful underwater cemetery in the world. Don’t worry, no ghosts here—just incredible marine life.

6. CYC Beach – A Hidden Gem

For those looking for a quieter spot to relax, CYC Beach is the place to be. Known for its soft, white sand, and crystalline waters, this small beach on Coron Island is the definition of a hidden gem. The laid-back vibe makes it the perfect place to catch some rays, dip your toes in the water, or just chill with a good book. Plus, the limestone formations add an extra level of charm, making you feel like you're floating in a postcard.

7. Barracuda Lake – Dive Into Adventure

Last but certainly not least is Barracuda Lake, one of the most unique lakes in Coron. What makes this lake so special? It’s got a thermocline like Twin Lagoon, but here, you’ll experience fresh water and saltwater mixing, making it a diver's and snorkeler's paradise. It’s surrounded by towering cliffs, and the underwater scenery is otherworldly.

The eerie underwater rock formations and crystal-clear waters make for a surreal diving experience. The legend behind the name comes from a huge barracuda that’s said to have once lived in the lake. Today, it’s just the perfect spot for underwater exploration, where the water’s temperature shifts from refreshing coolness to a warm embrace as you dive deeper.

Wrapping It Up: Coron Island Hopping – Your Next Great Adventure

So there you have it—Coron, where every stop feels like a new adventure, and every stop is a new reason to fall in love with Palawan. From Kayangan Lake to Barracuda Lake, from Sunset Beach to the Smith Coral Garden, this place will captivate your heart and make you wonder why you hadn’t been here sooner.

Now, if you’re reading this and thinking about booking your own Coron island-hopping tour, just know that you’re in for a treat. Between the crystal-clear waters, fascinating shipwrecks, and beautiful lagoons, Coron is an absolute must-see.

And trust me, when you go—don’t forget your sunscreen, your camera, and your sense of wonder. Coron will give you all three in return.

Tour 2: Twin Lagoon, Sunset Beach, and the Hidden Wonders of Coron

When you book a tour in Coron, you're not just getting a boat ride to some random spots—you’re signing up for a full-on paradise adventure. Tour 2 in Coron is the type of experience that’ll make you wish you had a time machine to keep coming back to it. Get ready for jaw-dropping views, crystal-clear waters, and enough Instagram-worthy moments to fill an entire travel blog post. Let’s dive into the magic of Twin Lagoon, Sunset Beach, and more—because Coron is ready to show you what real beauty looks like!

1. Twin Lagoon – Two Worlds, One Lagoon

Let’s kick things off with Twin Lagoon, one of the most talked-about spots in Coron—and for good reason. You know when you’re at a party, and someone mentions a place so cool that everyone immediately stops what they’re doing and crowds around them? Yeah, that's Twin Lagoon.

This unique lagoon features two bodies of water: one warm, one cold. And they’re separated by a dramatic limestone cliff, which is about as impressive as it sounds. It’s like nature’s version of having two rooms in a house: one cozy and warm, the other cool and refreshing.

When you first arrive, the clear blue waters and towering cliffs make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a natural wonderland. But the real magic happens when you get in. The thermocline phenomenon (aka, the temperature shift between the two bodies of water) is super cool—and not just cool in the “cool” way. In one spot, the water is a warm bath, and in the other, it’s ice-cold like a glacier. You can even swim between the two, and you’ll feel like you’re diving between worlds.

2. Sunset Beach – A Beachy Paradise (and the Perfect Snack Spot)

After swimming in the lagoon, it’s time to head over to Sunset Beach. And when they say Sunset Beach, they mean it. This beach is made for sunset lovers, but even if you’re not the type to catch sunsets on the reg, this place will make you feel like you’re witnessing the most spectacular sunset of your life.

Here’s why: it’s not just the views that’ll steal your breath away (though those are top-tier), but the whole vibe of the place. Think white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and palm trees swaying in the breeze like they’re getting ready to shake off the stress of the day.

And the best part? You can actually relax here! Coron is stunning, yes, but Sunset Beach has that perfect vibe where you can grab some grub from the local hut (kubo), lay back in the sand, and just let the world melt away. It’s like the world’s most beautiful food court, but instead of food court noise, you get the sound of waves lapping against the shore. Pure bliss.

3. Smith Coral Garden – Underwater Wonderland

Now that we’ve gotten the land portion of our tour done, let’s head underwater. Coron is famous for its snorkeling spots, and Smith Coral Garden is at the top of the list. Imagine diving into crystal-clear waters and swimming through a vibrant underwater garden that feels like an aquarium—except you’re in the middle of it.

The garden is packed with colorful corals and a kaleidoscope of fish that will make you feel like you’re in an aquatic dream. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s even a chance you’ll spot a sea turtle or two, swimming gracefully alongside you. Don’t forget your underwater camera because these coral gardens make for some of the most gorgeous shots you’ll ever take.

Tour 3: El Nido – A Hidden Paradise of Crystal Waters and Epic Beaches

If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring a place that looks like it came straight out of a National Geographic magazine (or maybe an epic adventure movie), then El Nido should be at the top of your list. Tour 3 in El Nido offers a whole new level of beauty, packed with secret lagoons, clear turquoise waters, and beaches that could easily be mistaken for paradise on Earth.

Let’s dive into the details of this breathtaking tour, from the Big Lagoon to the Seven Commando Beach, and every stunning stop in between. Trust me, your camera roll is about to be flooded with jaw-dropping shots.

1. Big Lagoon – Where Blue Meets the Sky

First up on the list is the Big Lagoon, which is exactly what it sounds like: a lagoon so big and so beautiful, you’ll think you’ve discovered an ancient secret cove. Nestled between towering limestone cliffs, the Big Lagoon feels like it’s part of some hidden world that only the lucky few get to visit. The water? It’s a striking shade of blue that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting (but it’s even more beautiful in real life, of course).

As you glide through the narrow waterway, the cliffs towering above you make you feel like you’re in a natural fortress. You can take your time here, as the serene waters and stunning landscapes make it the perfect spot to just sit back, breathe, and embrace the beauty of it all. Don’t forget to snap a few photos, but honestly, nothing will do this place justice. It’s just that gorgeous.

2. Shimizu Island – Turtles, Snorkeling, and Lunch (Oh My!)

Next up, we’re heading to Shimizu Island. This is the perfect place to take a breather and enjoy a leisurely snorkeling session with some friendly turtles. The water is so clear, you’ll feel like you’re swimming through a live version of a nature documentary. The sea turtles here are as chill as they come, so you can float along beside them and watch them glide through the water with ease. It’s a magical moment you’ll never forget.

Once you’ve had your fill of snorkeling, it’s time to dig into some delicious food. Shimizu Island is known for its scenic views and its laid-back lunch vibes. Whether you’re munching on freshly prepared seafood or enjoying a picnic on the beach, this is one of those spots where you can simply kick back, relax, and enjoy the island life. Soak up the stunning views while savoring every bite—because life’s better when you’re eating on an island.

3. Payong-Payong Beach – A Picture-Perfect Slice of Heaven

After some turtle bonding and delicious bites, it’s time to head to Payong-Payong Beach—one of the most picture-perfect beaches in all of El Nido. The white sand here is so fine, it feels like you’re walking on powdered sugar, and the waters are so clear that it almost looks like the beach is straight out of a dream.

Add in the towering limestone cliffs that seem to pop out of nowhere, and you’ve got yourself a postcard-worthy scene that’s practically begging to be photographed. Take a leisurely swim, bask in the sun, or just lounge on the beach and soak in the tranquility. If you’ve ever needed a reminder that life’s better on the beach, this is it.

4. Secret Lagoon – A Hidden Gem with a Twist

Ready for a little adventure? Let’s head to the Secret Lagoon—and yes, it’s as secretive as it sounds. To get to this hidden gem, you’ll have to navigate through a small cave, which feels like you’re entering a secret world that only a few lucky adventurers get to experience.

Once you make it through the cave, you’ll be greeted by the lagoon’s serene beauty. The water here is crystal-clear, surrounded by dramatic limestone formations that give the place a mysterious, almost magical vibe. Whether you’re there to swim, explore, or just sit and take it all in, the Secret Lagoon offers a quiet escape from the world, making it one of the most unique stops on the tour.

5. Seven Commando Beach – The Ultimate Beach Hangout

After all the exploring and snorkeling, it’s time to unwind at Seven Commando Beach—a pristine, white-sand beach that’s just waiting for you to kick off your flip-flops and relax. The water here is an inviting shade of turquoise, and the palm trees sway in the breeze, giving off all the tropical vibes you could ever want.

But wait, there’s more! The best part about Seven Commando Beach is the beach bar, where you can grab a refreshing drink and hang out while listening to the sound of waves crashing on the shore. Whether you’re enjoying a cold coconut drink, sipping on something a little stronger, or just chilling with your crew, Seven Commando Beach has all the ingredients for the perfect end to a perfect day.

Final Thoughts – Is It Even Possible to Top This?

After spending the day hopping between the Big Lagoon, Shimizu Island, Payong-Payong Beach, Secret Lagoon, and Seven Commando Beach, you’ll find yourself asking: “How is this real?” Honestly, it’s hard to believe that a place this beautiful exists outside of a travel brochure. El Nido is one of the most enchanting places on Earth, and Tour 3 gives you a front-row seat to nature’s most jaw-dropping spectacles.

Trust me when I say that you’ll be pinching yourself the entire time to make sure you’re not dreaming. And even though no picture can truly capture how stunning these places are, you’ll still end up with a camera roll full of memories. So pack your bags, grab your snorkeling gear, and get ready to experience some of the most beautiful spots the Philippines has to offer. You’re about to live your best beach life!

Oslob and Kawasan Falls: Whale Sharks, Waterfalls, and Epic Adventures

If you’re heading to the Philippines and you’re looking for an adventure that blends wildlife, water sports, and breathtaking scenery, Oslob and Kawasan Falls should be on your bucket list. From swimming with gentle giants to tackling some of the most exhilarating cliff jumps, this adventure will have you feeling like a true thrill-seeker.

Let’s dive right into the two unforgettable experiences you’ll have at Oslob and Kawasan Falls, where you’ll find whale sharks, canyoneering, and, of course, plenty of jaw-dropping beauty.

1. Oslob – Swimming with Whale Sharks

When you think of Oslob, you probably think of whale sharks, and for a good reason—this is one of the best places in the world to swim with the largest fish species in the ocean. But hold up—before you start imagining a scene straight out of Finding Nemo, these whale sharks are the gentle giants of the sea, and they are super chill. Picture this: You’re floating in the crystal-clear waters of Oslob, and there it is—a whale shark as long as a bus, gracefully gliding past you. It’s an experience so surreal, you’ll be questioning if you’re in a dream.

But, before you start swimming with them, let’s get the facts straight: Safety first! You’re not allowed to touch these magnificent creatures, and you’ll be instructed to keep a safe distance. Still, you’ll be close enough to appreciate their unique color patterns, impressive size, and overall majesty. It’s like swimming next to a living dinosaur (okay, maybe not exactly, but you get the vibe). You’ll have around 30 minutes to soak in the experience, which might feel like time slowing down. And trust me, it’s worth every second.

By the end of it, you’ll find yourself grinning ear-to-ear. And with free admission, this experience is as easy on the wallet as it is on the eyes. So, grab your snorkel gear, say hello to the whale sharks, and feel like the luckiest human on the planet for those magical moments.

2. Kawasan Falls – Cliff Jumps, Canyoneering, and Epic Views

After you’ve had your fill of awe and wonder with the whale sharks, it’s time to unleash your inner adventure junkie with an afternoon of canyoneering at Kawasan Falls in Badian. Now, when I say “canyoneering,” I don’t mean a gentle stroll through a park—I mean trekking, climbing, swimming, and jumping off cliffs into crystal-clear water. Oh yes, we’re talking real adventure here, people!

You’ll begin the trek by making your way through the lush jungle, climbing over rocks, and wading through the most vibrant green water you’ve ever seen. And then, the fun begins: The cliff jumps! Trust me, you’ll get a nice dose of adrenaline as you leap off rocks and plunge into cool, refreshing water below. Each jump is a mix of thrill and exhilaration (just don’t forget to scream on your way down—because it’s fun).

But the real reward? After all that jumping, swimming, and climbing, you’ll finally arrive at the stunning Kawasan Falls. The sight of the water cascading over the cliffs is absolutely mesmerizing. Think Instagram-worthy waterfalls, turquoise waters, and a view that will make you feel like you’re in a postcard.

You’ll have about 3 hours of pure adventure, and don't worry—you won’t be going it alone. You'll have experienced guides and instructors with you every step of the way to keep things fun and safe. Plus, lunch is included, so you can refuel with some delicious local grub before hitting the next jump.

If you’ve never tried canyoneering before, this is the perfect place to start. Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or a first-timer, the whole experience is a wild ride that you won’t soon forget.

Final Thoughts – Is Oslob and Kawasan Falls Worth the Hype?

Oh, 100%! From the whale sharks of Oslob to the cliff-jumping madness at Kawasan Falls, these two experiences are definitely worth every minute of your time (and every drop of sweat you’ll work up). You’ll get a taste of the Philippines’ natural beauty and adventure in one go, with plenty of thrills, relaxation, and memories to last a lifetime.

So, pack your swimsuit, grab your courage, and get ready to face your fears while also experiencing the wonders of nature. Whether you’re a nature lover, adrenaline junkie, or just someone looking for a fun day out, Oslob and Kawasan Falls will not disappoint. Get out there and embrace the beauty of the Philippines—one whale shark and cliff jump at a time!

A Feast for the Senses: Discovering the Delicious Food, Friendly People, and Affordable Charm of the Philippines

When I think about my travels to the Philippines, one thing that immediately stands out (besides the breathtaking beaches and incredible scenery) is the food. It’s not just about eating—it’s an experience. From humble street snacks to vibrant meals, each dish is a reflection of the Philippine culture, offering bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and a sense of community. But there’s more: the Filipino hospitality and affordability of the country took me by surprise in the best way possible. Let me walk you through my culinary journey and share why the Philippines should be at the top of your travel list.

The Flavorful World of Filipino Cuisine

I’ll start with the food because, let’s face it, that's what we all want to talk about. The Philippines has a diverse culinary landscape, shaped by its rich history of Spanish, Chinese, and indigenous influences. The result? A mouthwatering array of dishes that will leave you craving more.

Sizzling Sisig: A Must-Try Filipino Classic

You can’t talk about Filipino food without mentioning sisig. It’s made from pork, typically pork face (yes, really), which is then chopped up and served sizzling hot, usually with a squeeze of calamansi (a local citrus fruit). It’s crispy, savory, and oh-so-flavorful. I first tried it at a local turo-turo (a Filipino term for a casual eatery), and it completely blew my mind. The combination of crispy, tender meat with tangy citrus and a bit of spice? Heaven on a plate.

Adobo: The Filipino Comfort Food

No trip to the Philippines is complete without tasting adobo. It’s a dish made with either chicken or pork, marinated in a sauce of soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and bay leaves, then slow-cooked until it’s fall-apart tender. There are endless variations of adobo across the country, but each one is rich, flavorful, and just comforting. It’s the dish I found myself ordering again and again—because why mess with perfection?

Lumpia: Filipino Spring Rolls

Lumpia (Filipino spring rolls) are a Filipino party favorite—and for good reason. Filled with a variety of meats, vegetables, and sometimes shrimp, these crispy little delights are perfect for snacking on while you explore the streets. I love how every bite is bursting with flavor, and they’re usually paired with a sweet and tangy dipping sauce. If you find yourself in the Philippines, grab a few from a local vendor or a neighborhood restaurant—they're cheap, delicious, and totally addictive.

Lechon: The King of Filipino Feasts

Let’s not forget lechon—the Filipino version of roast pig. Lechon is traditionally prepared during special occasions, but you can find it at almost any celebration or festivity. The skin is crispy, and the meat is incredibly tender. What makes it truly unforgettable is the sauce—a slightly sweet, savory lechon sauce that perfectly complements the pork. If you visit a family or attend a Filipino party, you’re guaranteed to see this dish on the table. Just make sure you’re ready to devour it all!

Halo-Halo: A Sweet Filipino Delight

For dessert, you can’t go wrong with halo-halo. This colorful concoction is a shaved ice treat packed with everything from sweetened fruits to jelly, puffed rice, and topped with a scoop of ice cream. It’s refreshing, fun to eat, and the perfect way to beat the heat. It’s sweet, it’s crunchy, and it’s everything you could want in a dessert.

Filipino Hospitality: Beyond the Food

While the food in the Philippines is absolutely amazing, what truly made my experience special was the incredible warmth of the Filipino people. From the moment I arrived, I was met with smiles, open arms, and a genuine willingness to help. Whether it was the taxi driver who gave me tips on where to find the best food, or the hotel staff who went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable, the hospitality was unlike anything I’ve experienced before.

One thing that truly stands out about the Philippines is how kind and welcoming everyone is. Filipinos are incredibly friendly—whether you're lost and need directions, or simply want to chat, they are eager to share their stories, culture, and pride in their country. I made lifelong memories with strangers who quickly became friends, and I left the country feeling like I had experienced the true heart of the Philippines.

Affordable Travel: More Fun, Less Cost

Now let’s talk about the best part: the cost. The Philippines is ridiculously affordable. Whether you’re living it up in a luxurious resort or enjoying a meal at a street-side stall, your money goes a long way here. The food is cheap, and not just the street food (although I’ll never stop raving about how great street food is in the Philippines). You can find delicious, hearty meals at restaurants for a fraction of what you’d pay in most Western countries. I was able to dine out daily, try all the local dishes I could dream of, and still spend less than I would on a single meal at home. Street food in particular is so affordable—you can fill up on delicious snacks like isaw (grilled chicken intestines), fish balls, and kwek-kwek (quail eggs dipped in batter) for just a few pesos.

Even accommodations are incredibly affordable. I stayed at both budget guesthouses and 5-star hotels, and every single place offered great service at a price that was far below what I’d pay in other popular tourist destinations. The ability to explore all the islands without worrying too much about the cost makes the Philippines an ideal destination for both budget and luxury travelers.
